TEST DRIVE #002

TEST DRIVE #002

( 0 0 1 ) » WAKE UP
Were you asleep or were you unconscious? It doesn't matter: when you come to, there's an odd taste in your mouth and there's a low-level mechanical hum in the air. Your head hurts and you feel nauseous. You aren't anywhere you know: everything around you is metal, from the floor you lie on all the way to the ceiling. You are dressed in a jumpsuit you definitely weren't wearing before.

"We tried to save the world. I think— I think we did the opposite."

The message repeats on a loop. If you look for its source, you find a comms device on the floor next to you. The logo on its wallpaper says REVERIE TERMINAL. Upon closer inspection, you find the same logo on your jumpsuit.

Welcome to your new home. What choice do you have but to explore your surroundings?
( 0 0 1 . 1 ) » WAKE UP WHERE?
When you wake up, you find that you're not alone. But more importantly, you find that you're in a closet. An empty closet, bar you and your new companion. It's small, cramped, and there is no door that you can see. The ceiling is low, there is barely any lights, only some coming from the tiny flashlight clipped to your suit's shoulder. You cannot be sure that there is any air coming in to the room.

Are these grooves in the wall supposed to mean something?

( 0 0 2 ) » OBSERVATION DECK
There were no windows in the corridor you woke up in and no windows in any of the crew quarters you might have checked for occupants — but there are plenty of windows on the uppermost level of the station, deck 1. In fact, there are windows from floor to ceiling all along the circumference of the station's circular deck, and it's possible to walk along it all. What it shows is a strange solar system you've never seen before and a planet that might resemble one you know, but certainly isn't the same.

You're in space. You don't know where you are. Neither does anyone else.

( 0 0 3 ) » BAR
On deck 3, you find the bar. Tucked away from the crew quarters, it's dimly lit, there are bar stools thrown down on the floor and what looks like some very old drink spills, crusty and dark against the bar top. But there is alcohol here, or at least, what you think is alcohol, in bottles with faded labels, most of them indecipherable. Take a drink, get drunk, start a fight, or start a party? You're stuck on this station, might as well make the most of it, right?

( 0 0 4 ) » SPACEQUAKES
One second, you are is walking. Magnetic boots are on, the ground feels solid enough, for a metal deck in a space station. Everything is perfectly fine, or at least as fine as it can be, given that you still don't know where you are or how you came to be here.

The next moment, it's like everything explodes around you. You're thrown against the wall as sparks erupts from electrical panels, as the whole station rumbles and shakes around you. You fall to the deck, earning yourself scratches from the grating. When you look up, it's like nothing has happened. No wires hanging from open panels, no flickering lights, no more shaking. Like an earthquake in space.

( 0 0 5 ) » NETWORK
The comms device you found next to you when waking up connects to a station-wide network, REVERIE NET. You have the option to post video, voice or text messages.

What will you share?

( 0 0 6 ) » WILDCARD
The station features a variety of locations, from sleeping quarters free for the claiming to a dirty swimming pool and a bar that still holds alcohol (though some of the bottles seem to have been opened a while ago).

Go wild, but don't wreck the place. It's your home for the foreseeable future, after all.

001 » OBSERVATION DECK
( most of what can be seen from the spot charlie's chosen is darkness and the distant stars, but he's also looking out over the planet. it, too, is mostly bathed in darkness, but there's some light still illuminating it. if he squints a little, he can pretend — he can pretend that it isn't a strange planet, that it isn't earth, but that it's rhodia. that rhodia has not been lost, that the shadowkin did not wipe out its people, his people, that they did not wipe out the planet with its people.

he still misses home, every day. for all that earth has given him opportunities he never could have dreamt of on rhodia, he misses it. he thinks that he always will. )

It's beautiful. ( he sighs, softly, when he hears someone approach. there's a weight to the words; the heaviness of the throne, of loss and of guilt and of aching need. but when he turns to face whoever it was that passed behind him, it's with a bright smile on his features. ) Hi. I'm Charlie.

hello, i'm charlie

( come at me for anything! please note that charlie's introspection may feature suicidal tendencies and talk of genocide. )

Before I arrived here, I would have told you that alien species were strictly science fiction.

[ Says the furry blue mutant. ]

But I meet someone here whose DNA was altered by an intelligent race of aliens, so I suppose they must be real, in some parallel universe. I think it would be pretty groovy to meet an alien, provided they come in peace.

[ Hank, no one says "groovy" anymore. ]

Groovy?

Sorry. I suppose that phrase isn't used much anymore.

Cool, then. Far out.

Oh, I see.

You think aliens are cool?
bestials: (04)

[personal profile] bestials 2018-07-03 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as they weren't trying to hurt people, or conquer my planet, or anything. Sure, why not?

[personal profile] omnicides 2018-07-07 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
That's a good way to look at it.

Is there a reason you're asking about aliens? Or were you just inspired by the setting?

Does space not make you think of aliens?

I guess my mind goes more to Captain Kirk or Neil Armstrong.

[personal profile] bestials 2018-07-07 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Captain James T Kirk is a character on Star Trek, a television show about a spaceship that's been on for... about four years now?

Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon.

[personal profile] omnicides 2018-07-11 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
I knew that. About Armstrong.

( totally. definitely. yep. )

[Clara can't help but feel a fist clench her heart, even as the newcomer turns a cheery smile towards her. God, he's just a kid. No one deserves to be here, but least of all someone scarcely older than her students. Nonetheless, she smooths a calm smile over her anger and returns the nicety.]

Clara.

[She looks down at the planet, fingers resting against the glass. It's been almost two months, and she might have finally tired of this sight. The stars just bring restlessness to her stomach instead of excitement.]

It's a hell of a view. Almost worth the captivity.

[That's mainly a joke, but her voice is gentle and kind.]
omnicides: (« lost »)

[personal profile] omnicides 2018-07-07 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
( he is just a kid. seventeen and carrying too much loss in his heart and too much weight on his shoulders. being here is not the worst of it by any stretch of the imagination. maybe a fresh start is actually for the better. clara's voice is gentle and kind and charlie turns toward it like a flower to the sun, soaking up that warmth and kindness.

he knows he doesn't deserve it, though. )

I've seen worse places. ( he responds, after a brief moment, smile wobbling for a moment before he steadies it again. )
oddbod: (floating neither up or down)

[personal profile] oddbod 2018-07-08 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oh, that sadness can't get past her. She steps closer, brightens her smile; tries to take the bitterness out of her own heart.]

Me too, [ she says, friendly and easy.] I've been to America.
omnicides: (« brave »)

[personal profile] omnicides 2018-07-11 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
( she steps closer, her smile brighter, and charlie responds to both of those things like a flower seeing the sun again for the first time, standing a little straighter and smiling a little brighter in return. )

I haven't. What's it like?
