TEST DRIVE #002

TEST DRIVE #002

( 0 0 1 ) » WAKE UP
Were you asleep or were you unconscious? It doesn't matter: when you come to, there's an odd taste in your mouth and there's a low-level mechanical hum in the air. Your head hurts and you feel nauseous. You aren't anywhere you know: everything around you is metal, from the floor you lie on all the way to the ceiling. You are dressed in a jumpsuit you definitely weren't wearing before.

"We tried to save the world. I think— I think we did the opposite."

The message repeats on a loop. If you look for its source, you find a comms device on the floor next to you. The logo on its wallpaper says REVERIE TERMINAL. Upon closer inspection, you find the same logo on your jumpsuit.

Welcome to your new home. What choice do you have but to explore your surroundings?
( 0 0 1 . 1 ) » WAKE UP WHERE?
When you wake up, you find that you're not alone. But more importantly, you find that you're in a closet. An empty closet, bar you and your new companion. It's small, cramped, and there is no door that you can see. The ceiling is low, there is barely any lights, only some coming from the tiny flashlight clipped to your suit's shoulder. You cannot be sure that there is any air coming in to the room.

Are these grooves in the wall supposed to mean something?

( 0 0 2 ) » OBSERVATION DECK
There were no windows in the corridor you woke up in and no windows in any of the crew quarters you might have checked for occupants — but there are plenty of windows on the uppermost level of the station, deck 1. In fact, there are windows from floor to ceiling all along the circumference of the station's circular deck, and it's possible to walk along it all. What it shows is a strange solar system you've never seen before and a planet that might resemble one you know, but certainly isn't the same.

You're in space. You don't know where you are. Neither does anyone else.

( 0 0 3 ) » BAR
On deck 3, you find the bar. Tucked away from the crew quarters, it's dimly lit, there are bar stools thrown down on the floor and what looks like some very old drink spills, crusty and dark against the bar top. But there is alcohol here, or at least, what you think is alcohol, in bottles with faded labels, most of them indecipherable. Take a drink, get drunk, start a fight, or start a party? You're stuck on this station, might as well make the most of it, right?

( 0 0 4 ) » SPACEQUAKES
One second, you are is walking. Magnetic boots are on, the ground feels solid enough, for a metal deck in a space station. Everything is perfectly fine, or at least as fine as it can be, given that you still don't know where you are or how you came to be here.

The next moment, it's like everything explodes around you. You're thrown against the wall as sparks erupts from electrical panels, as the whole station rumbles and shakes around you. You fall to the deck, earning yourself scratches from the grating. When you look up, it's like nothing has happened. No wires hanging from open panels, no flickering lights, no more shaking. Like an earthquake in space.

( 0 0 5 ) » NETWORK
The comms device you found next to you when waking up connects to a station-wide network, REVERIE NET. You have the option to post video, voice or text messages.

What will you share?

( 0 0 6 ) » WILDCARD
The station features a variety of locations, from sleeping quarters free for the claiming to a dirty swimming pool and a bar that still holds alcohol (though some of the bottles seem to have been opened a while ago).

Go wild, but don't wreck the place. It's your home for the foreseeable future, after all.

stop hurting me sonya.

( He blinks rather slowly at her hug. Mostly because he's not sure of the last time anyone touched him ( other than Hank, who carried his rat-arsed self to bed most nights ). He doesn't know her from Eve, but she's scared and he isn't that far gone that he'd let someone suffer.

And it helps, even though he hates it. He's not alone.
)

Charles.

( They head to the door, and even though it's been a while since he tried talking to a stranger, he figures he owes her that. )

You mentioned Trask? Your friends, they're mutants too?
raverie: DNT. (volunteer)

it's her secondary mutation.

[personal profile] raverie 2018-06-06 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She gives a little smile in acknowledgment of the name. Charles. Not Chuck, or Charlie. It's a little old-fashioned, a little unusual.

Falling into step beside him, she does wonder: if this is a prison, then where are the guards? ]

That's right. Human parents, though. I was supposed to look after them. [ Said as she's examining the ceiling above them, looking for cameras. Conveniently hiding her face. Her heart physically aches when she thinks about Clarice and the Struckers back there. Get a grip, girl!

She swallows, manages to pull it together enough for Charles, who really didn't ask to be escorting an emotional wreck around the place. ]

Are you all right?

[ Not to like, divert from the topic at hand, but she can't help asking. ]

It isn't your fault.

( For the first time he sounds genuine, a softness breaking out from under the severity of his irritation. How many families has he failed by now? How many children has he lost? He can't stop wars, can't kill prejudice, can't do anything.

And so, the pain in her voice is familiar.
)

If they're here too, then we'll find them. Though I think there's something more at play this time. It's barely been a breath since we landed on the moon. He can't have developed space travel that quickly.

( He isn't going to respond to her later question. He's not fine. But he can survive. )
raverie: DNT. (sidelong)

dofp charles is my legit fave ok

[personal profile] raverie 2018-06-06 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He says it like he believes it. Not her fault. Like he wants her to believe it too, and Sonya only finds it noticeable because it's so different from the way he's said everything else. A glimmer of something through the fog.

And it's the truth, what he says. Sonya knows it, deep down. Blaming herself is the alternative for facing how awful the world is for mutants. ]

He? Oh. [ Trask, yeah. And it's kind of funny, but his comment about the moon landing doesn't seem so strange to her. ] No, you're right. It's unusual.

[ She knows he's avoiding the question, but that's an answer in and of itself, isn't it? That's all right. ]

I thought it might be, in here. You know. [ Tapping her index finger to her temple. The universal sign language for telepathy, right? ]
mentis: (batch01_049)

[personal profile] mentis 2018-06-09 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah.

( Wildly he wonders if she knows. Maybe she does. Maybe she's another telepath just like him. But he thinks he knows people a little better than he used to, and the nice girl act doesn't seem all that false. )

I doubt it. A telepath powerful enough to control both of us? Especially when we're not the only ones here? There hasn't been anyone quite like that in a long time.

( Emma's dead. And he's --.

Well, he's broken.
)

Can I ask what your power is? It might be useful if we have to defend ourselves.
raverie: DNT. (wary)

[personal profile] raverie 2018-06-11 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[ What he says makes sense. She doesn't know enough about telepathy anyway, the kind of control it would take to subdue multiple targets.

He asks and she looks briefly rueful, shaking her head. ]

If there are guards stationed I might be able to do something. [ One on one, that's her strength. ] I breathe this...smoke. And if someone breathes it in, I can see their memories. Take them away or create new ones.

[ If she has to. ]

I can make someone forget they've seen us, but I'm not bulletproof. [ Like some people she knows. Not exactly the most combat-ready. ] You?
mentis: (batch01_005)

[personal profile] mentis 2018-06-13 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a little complicated at the moment.

( He offers her a grimace, a slight tip of his head that indicates he doesn't exactly know to explain it. )

I'm currently on a treatment that has made my mutation nonexistent. Medicinally speaking, I do need it, so it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. ( It's a lie, he knows it's a lie. But part of him wants to keep pretending. He needs the serum, he does. He can't live without it, can't stomach the pain. At least his voice doesn't shake, and his hands are in the jumpsuit pocket, so the tremble isn't obvious. )

But I was a telepath myself.
raverie: DNT. (warm)

[personal profile] raverie 2018-06-14 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh.

[ That's fair. She's not the type to press when there's no visible need for it. And right now, there isn't. The memory of both what she's done to Agent Turner and Johnny's sharp disappointment in her misuse of her powers are fresh in Sonya's mind. He doesn't have to talk about - all that.

The idea of a treatment that could affect someone's mutation throws off a warning bell in her head, but they've already spoken about Trask. ]

That's all right, then. If you're fine with it.

[ It comes out quietly. She's trying to be reassuring. Open. Her ever-present desire to make things better is starting to rouse itself, strengthening the more they talk. The less Charles becomes a stranger. ]

I'm hoping we won't have to lift any cars or - [ She makes a shoving gesture, miming the use of the more kinetic powers she's seen. ] You know. [ Now she's scanning the walls for a fire extinguisher or something that could be used as a weapon. Since they're both woefully on the human side when it comes to physical force. ] My friend would love this place, but she's not here.

[ All metal. ]

Is your friend an aspiring astronaut?

( He means it to be friendly. It isn't her fault his life has gone so terribly in the past few years. She doesn't deserve the bitter cruelty that's been brewing inside of him. )

Someone I know, Hank, he'd love this too. There's this television programme he's quite obsessed with. Something about men and women travelling in space. He spent a week trying to master a hand movement one of them makes, I think if he were here he'd be quite overcome.

( Charles hasn't watched it. But he does listen. )
raverie: DNT. (tender)

[personal profile] raverie 2018-06-18 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The question makes her smile, or maybe it’s thinking about Lorna that does it. Either way, if she’s noticed Charles making more of an effort, she doesn’t comment on it. ]

No, she controls metal. [ So naturally, she’d feel at home in a structure made of it. ] I’ve seen her fly with it.

[ So much pride and love in her voice. Not an astronaut, but she can do the zero gravity thing. ]

Wait, are you talking about Star Trek?
mentis: (xxxii.)

[personal profile] mentis 2018-06-19 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Metal?

( The change that comes over him is sudden, like a shiver of concern. He looks at her, mind working a mile a minute. But she said she. Unless Erik has had some kind of dramatic accident ... )

Yes, that's it. I can't get into it myself.

( A frown. )

Sorry, your friend who controls metal, can you tell me her name?
raverie: (2 - qHVFEWI)

[personal profile] raverie 2018-06-19 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[ His reaction doesn't surprise her. Maybe because there's a super famous mutant terrorist who also controls metal out there, but it's not the first time someone's had a twitchy reaction to that mutation. ]

Polaris?

[ Perhaps a little telling that she doesn't just say Lorna, but they're wanted fugitives, and all. ]

I helped her and Thunderbird run the Mutant Underground out of Atlanta.

[ That much everyone knows, so she doesn't feel like it's giving anything away. ]

( He makes a small noise of fondness as she gives up codenames. It makes him look a little younger, but it only lasts for a second. )

And here I thought it was only my sister who had a fondness for codenames.

( He can see why mutants might need them, and the idea had kept on long after Raven left him. He'd heard some of the children discussing what they'd liked to be called in the months before the school shut down. )

I know a man who can control metal. I just didn't know it was more common than just he.

( He wants to soothe her fears as much as he can without his power. He means her no harm. )
raverie: (dreamer009)

[personal profile] raverie 2018-06-20 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[ It does make him look younger, to the point where Sonya considers for the first time that they could almost be contemporaries. Maybe not quite, but close.

Don't blame her, the X-Men started it. ]

No, codenames are definitely still going strong.

[ There's a fondness that crosses her face at the thought of her friends. Far from here. She's hoping they're safe, wherever they ended up. ]

I... [ A man who can control metal. ] Yeah. Well, there's Magneto too.

[ If we're talking about mutants who can move metal, and all. There's at least one other one out there, right? But there's no connection, as far as Sonya knows (ha.) ]

But she's cooler than him.

Cool.

( Did groovy lose all power? Is he getting old? This is distressing. Though not quite as distrssing as everything else. )

I don't imagine that's hard at all. Magneto doesn't exactly encourage people's fondness.

( He's a prick. But Charles at least keeps his voice level as they move cautiously through the station. Everything is very grey. It's almost depressing. )

I can't imagine what it must be like living in a place like this.

[ Is she talking like a millennial again? ]

Fair point.

[ To be fair, Lorna also does not exactly encourage the fondness of others. Meaning she's not interested in it, rather than that she doesn't inspire. ]

It is a little on the grim side. [ Like waking up in a video game, the same-ness of their surroundings] Makes you think... How much do we need the sun?

[ She offers a light chuckle, but now that she's said it, there is that. Is it healthy to be in space? ]

Mm. And then there's the fact that Nasa has some fairly rigorous training regimes for astronauts before they even attempt space itself. We have gravity now, but it's not like it is when we're just walking around on the Earth's surface. We don't know exactly what this will do to our muscles.

( Although, with how skittish this young woman is about being here, maybe he should curtail that train of thought. )

There's bound to be someone on the ship that knows how these things go. We'll be fine, they'll probably be a rundown on what to do. ( He turns from the grey lifeless corner, into another grey lifeless hall, his brows knitted together and drawing further down as they walk. )
