TEST DRIVE #001

( 0 0 1 ) » WAKE UP
Were you asleep or were you unconscious? It doesn't matter: when you come to, there's an odd taste in your mouth and there's a low-level mechanical hum in the air. Your head hurts and you feel nauseous. You aren't anywhere you know: everything around you is metal, from the floor you lie on all the way to the ceiling. You are dressed in a jumpsuit you definitely weren't wearing before.

"We tried to save the world. I think— I think we did the opposite."

The message repeats on a loop. If you look for its source, you find a comms device on the floor next to you. The logo on its wallpaper says REVERIE TERMINAL. Upon closer inspection, you find the same logo on your jumpsuit.

Welcome to your new home. What choice do you have but to explore your surroundings?
( 0 0 1 . 1 ) » WAKE UP WHERE?
When you wake up, you find that you're not alone. But more importantly, you find that you're in a closet. An empty closet, bar you and your new companion. It's small, cramped, and there is no door that you can see. The ceiling is low, there is barely any lights, only some coming from the tiny flashlight clipped to your suit's shoulder. You cannot be sure that there is any air coming in to the room.

Are these grooves in the wall supposed to mean something?

( 0 0 2 ) » OBSERVATION DECK
There were no windows in the corridor you woke up in and no windows in any of the crew quarters you might have checked for occupants — but there are plenty of windows on the uppermost level of the station, deck 1. In fact, there are windows from floor to ceiling all along the circumference of the station's circular deck, and it's possible to walk along it all. What it shows is a strange solar system you've never seen before and a planet that might resemble one you know, but certainly isn't the same.

You're in space. You don't know where you are. Neither does anyone else.

( 0 0 3 ) » BAR
On deck 3, you find the bar. Tucked away from the crew quarters, it's dimly lit, there are bar stools thrown down on the floor and what looks like some very old drink spills, crusty and dark against the bar top. But there is alcohol here, or at least, what you think is alcohol, in bottles with faded labels, most of them indecipherable. Take a drink, get drunk, start a fight, or start a party? You're stuck on this station, might as well make the most of it, right?
( 0 0 3 . 1 ) » VIRTUAL
But the alcohol isn't even the most interesting part of your discovery (depending on who you are, of course). No, what catches your interest is a second, smaller room off from the main bar room, which looks to be some kind of arcade. There are a few VR sets lined up against one of the walls, and surely, they can't be working, right? Nothing is on this rust bucket. And yet, if you put it on, the display comes to life.

It's a pretty simple HUD, and when you move around in reality, you move around in the virtual world you've just entered. It's a luxurious world, full of brightly, saturated colors, making it just a little obvious that it isn't real. Ahead, there is a jungle, a temple, and a city. You can play around, slay some monsters, have some fun, but you can feel yourself growing hot, like the VR helmet is burning your forehead.

And when you try to take it off, you find that you can't. The HUD glitches, the sound cuts off to a blaring alarm, and an error message appears, in glowing, blinking red letters: FINISH THE MISSION. Will you, despite not knowing what the mission even is, or will you fight to get the helmet off?

( 0 0 4 ) » MALFUNCTIONS
(cw: body horror, bodily functions, gore, blood, death)

The fabricators function well enough, until they don't. One day, one moment, everything's all right — the food doesn't generally taste amazing and sometimes downright awful, but it's nourishing and filling no matter what your dietary needs — and the next, things go a little haywire.

In short, the fabricators are malfunctioning.

Oh, they're still producing food that looks and tastes much the same as before, but now there are some unexpected side effects.

NB: Characters may experience any of the following side effects: nausea ranging from slight to debilitating, the sensation of being happily and affectionately — but not overwhelmingly — drunk, bone-deep exhaustion and weariness that makes it hard to move, or repeated hallucinations of loved ones screaming for help, reaching out to characters and leading them down abandoned corridors or being killed by unseen forces.

The extent to which characters are affected is up to players, as is whether you'd prefer to play this more lightheartedly or tackling more serious themes. If the latter, please provide warnings in subject lines where necessary.

( 0 0 5 ) » NETWORK
The comms device you found next to you when waking up connects to a station-wide network, REVERIE NET. You have the option to post video, voice or text messages.

What will you share?
( 0 0 5 . 1 ) » NETWORK USERNAME
When you first turn on your communication device, it requests for you to pick a username to identify you on the network. It can be anything you want. However, as you try to input a username in your wristband to access the network, you get the following message, along with a small, but irritating, warming sound:

this username is already in use.

What does this mean? Is there other people around? Were there other people around?

( 0 0 6 ) » WILDCARD
The station features a variety of locations, from sleeping quarters free for the claiming to a dirty swimming pool and a bar that still holds alcohol (though some of the bottles seem to have been opened a while ago).

Go wild, but don't wreck the place. It's your home for the foreseeable future, after all.

all right. coming your way.

( give him some fifteen minutes before he finally shows up, the same jumpsuit as everyone else, his nose and eyes somewhere between darkly bruised and angry red. )
donkeyballs: (grim)

[personal profile] donkeyballs 2018-05-12 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
[Alex, on the other hand, looks pretty okay - save that he's got one arm in a sling. When he sees Holden's face he whistles lowly.]

Damn, Cap. What the hell happened to you? You manage to get in a fight right after wakin' up?
dealign: (CROSS.)

[personal profile] dealign 2018-05-12 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
This didn't happen here.

( his brows pull together in a frown. c'mon, alex, you know that he beat up a martian for you. okay, and for the roci. and got pretty banged up in the process. nothing new, right?

his leg still smarts, but it's not too bad. still, alex might be able to tell that he's not walking as smoothly as usual when he approaches. )

What happened to your arm?
donkeyballs: (grim)

[personal profile] donkeyballs 2018-05-12 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
[Alex frowned. He did not, in fact, know any of these things, nor did he know he didn't know them.]

What? You sure as hell didn't have a shiner like that, last time I saw you.

[He notes the limp, and he's getting more worried by the second, but he doesn't comment on it. Instead he glances down a this arm when Holden mentions it.]

I uh- got trapped. Amos tried pullin' me out. Naomi stopped him from breakin' the other one, at least, so small mercys.
dealign: (CREASES.)

[personal profile] dealign 2018-05-12 11:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I did. ( the last time he'd seen alex, at least. ) You don't remember the Martian's trying to take over the Roci?

( or the hybrid crushing his leg... but he tries not to think about that one too much or too hard. the low-level ache is a constant reminder already, he doesn't need to help it along. )

Jesus Christ, Alex.
donkeyballs: (eyebrow raise)

OH RIGHT okay he would know where the limp was from, woops

[personal profile] donkeyballs 2018-05-12 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
[That stops him dead, confusion written across his face.]

Martians tried to take over the Roci? What? When? I've been here for a week, boss, I ain't seen the Roci in that whole time. Hell, I ain't even found another Martian at all.
dealign: (DOUBT.)

handwaves handwavily

[personal profile] dealign 2018-05-12 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
( holden lifts a hand to rub across his face and barely stops himself in time before it connects with his bruises. he drops it again. )

You seriously don't remember. ( his tone is too flat to really count as a question. what the fuck? )
donkeyballs: (deep sigh)

[personal profile] donkeyballs 2018-05-12 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[Something very cold started to run down his spine, and he just shook his head.]

Last thing I remember, we fried that protomolecule son of a bitch in the Roci's drive plume, then got you to the medical bay. Naomi said she was gonna talk to you, and--

[... And then he didn't remember anything else.]
dealign: (CREASES.)

[personal profile] dealign 2018-05-12 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
That was days ago.

( look at his leg and how capable he is of putting weight on it without screaming in pain if you need proof. )
donkeyballs: (eyebrow raise)

[personal profile] donkeyballs 2018-05-12 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know. At least ten days, by Amos' reckonin', but there ain't - the Roci ain't here, Cap.

You've been asleep this whole time, or in cryo, or somethin'.

[But he's pretty sure that's not what Holden means.]

So what exactly - what's the last thing you remember, then?
dealign: (CREASES.)

[personal profile] dealign 2018-05-12 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
( alex talks, rationalises — and holden's already shaking his head. that's not even close to what he meant. )

Days on the Roci, Alex. I've been on the Roci. So have you and Amos and everyone. We rescued Chrisjen Avasarala and Gunnery Sgt Bobbie Draper. Picked up Martian survivors. They tried to take over, Draper stopped them. You got beat up real bad.

We went down to Io, Alex. To get Prax's little girl.

Don't tell me you remember none of that.
donkeyballs: (we have got to do this)

[personal profile] donkeyballs 2018-05-12 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[Alex's expression turned worried.]

Holden. You're sayin' that we just - happened to run into a UN undersecretary and a Martian marine, and then more martians, and then the Marine stopped them - -

[He gave Holden a sort of helpless look.]

Only one who's been beatin' me up is Amos, and he did that because he thought I was gonna be trapped in a door forever.

You sure you ain't just... dreamed all this, while you were out? [But he glanced at Holden's nose. That definitely wasn't dreamed up.] ... Otherwise there's something really weird goin' on here, and I don't like it.
dealign: (SOFTNESS.)

[personal profile] dealign 2018-05-12 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
It didn't just happen. Took some serious maneuvering and taking on a UN warship to rescue their asses, and it was your idea to begin with.

( alex can't have forgotten that. which means it hasn't happened yet. or that this is some weird ass hallucination. )

Did someone put anything funny in the coffee this morning? ( it's a helpless kind of joke and he doesn't sound like he believes it or thinks it's funny for even just a minute.

in fact, it's less than a minute before he sighs. )
Definitely weird.
donkeyballs: (sideeye)

[personal profile] donkeyballs 2018-05-12 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
My idea. [There was a beat, as he took that in. A distress beacon from a UN secretary general and a martian marine?

...

Yeah. Yeah, he'd want to answer that.

He looked extremely uncomfortable for a few seconds, before:]

Look, Chief. At this point, it don't really matter. If they're messin' with our heads, could be either yours or mine and there's no way to tell. The important thing is - we've got each other. Amos and Naomi are here too. Only one we're missin' is Prax. We find him, we find a way to get back home.

Right?

dealign: (SILENCE.)

[personal profile] dealign 2018-05-13 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
Damn straight.

( he's out of the heroic intervention business. mostly. probably. generally speaking. but this? this isn't a heroic intervention, this is his crew and he's going to do whatever he can to get them back home. even if he has no fucking clue what to do or how to do anything yet. )

But first thing's first. Where do I find coffee?
donkeyballs: (eyebrow raise)

[personal profile] donkeyballs 2018-05-13 01:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Holden's firm agreement isn't lost on Alex, and he looks relieved. Damn, he missed you, Cap.

However, his expression turns slightly apologetic at the mention of coffee. ]

I'll, uh, show you where the mess hall is, but - don't go gettin' your hopes up. The station seems to use 3d printin' to make all the food, and the printers ain't exactly... callibrated right.
dealign: (CREASES.)

[personal profile] dealign 2018-05-13 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
( his agreement is a lot firmer than he feels, but that's part of being captain, isn't it? exuding confidence even when you have none to exude. things aren't like that on the roci, if only because it's such a small crew and they're family more than anything else, but holden still tries. )

This place is sounding worse by the minute.
