TEST DRIVE #001

( 0 0 1 ) » WAKE UP
Were you asleep or were you unconscious? It doesn't matter: when you come to, there's an odd taste in your mouth and there's a low-level mechanical hum in the air. Your head hurts and you feel nauseous. You aren't anywhere you know: everything around you is metal, from the floor you lie on all the way to the ceiling. You are dressed in a jumpsuit you definitely weren't wearing before.

"We tried to save the world. I think— I think we did the opposite."

The message repeats on a loop. If you look for its source, you find a comms device on the floor next to you. The logo on its wallpaper says REVERIE TERMINAL. Upon closer inspection, you find the same logo on your jumpsuit.

Welcome to your new home. What choice do you have but to explore your surroundings?
( 0 0 1 . 1 ) » WAKE UP WHERE?
When you wake up, you find that you're not alone. But more importantly, you find that you're in a closet. An empty closet, bar you and your new companion. It's small, cramped, and there is no door that you can see. The ceiling is low, there is barely any lights, only some coming from the tiny flashlight clipped to your suit's shoulder. You cannot be sure that there is any air coming in to the room.

Are these grooves in the wall supposed to mean something?

( 0 0 2 ) » OBSERVATION DECK
There were no windows in the corridor you woke up in and no windows in any of the crew quarters you might have checked for occupants — but there are plenty of windows on the uppermost level of the station, deck 1. In fact, there are windows from floor to ceiling all along the circumference of the station's circular deck, and it's possible to walk along it all. What it shows is a strange solar system you've never seen before and a planet that might resemble one you know, but certainly isn't the same.

You're in space. You don't know where you are. Neither does anyone else.

( 0 0 3 ) » BAR
On deck 3, you find the bar. Tucked away from the crew quarters, it's dimly lit, there are bar stools thrown down on the floor and what looks like some very old drink spills, crusty and dark against the bar top. But there is alcohol here, or at least, what you think is alcohol, in bottles with faded labels, most of them indecipherable. Take a drink, get drunk, start a fight, or start a party? You're stuck on this station, might as well make the most of it, right?
( 0 0 3 . 1 ) » VIRTUAL
But the alcohol isn't even the most interesting part of your discovery (depending on who you are, of course). No, what catches your interest is a second, smaller room off from the main bar room, which looks to be some kind of arcade. There are a few VR sets lined up against one of the walls, and surely, they can't be working, right? Nothing is on this rust bucket. And yet, if you put it on, the display comes to life.

It's a pretty simple HUD, and when you move around in reality, you move around in the virtual world you've just entered. It's a luxurious world, full of brightly, saturated colors, making it just a little obvious that it isn't real. Ahead, there is a jungle, a temple, and a city. You can play around, slay some monsters, have some fun, but you can feel yourself growing hot, like the VR helmet is burning your forehead.

And when you try to take it off, you find that you can't. The HUD glitches, the sound cuts off to a blaring alarm, and an error message appears, in glowing, blinking red letters: FINISH THE MISSION. Will you, despite not knowing what the mission even is, or will you fight to get the helmet off?

( 0 0 4 ) » MALFUNCTIONS
(cw: body horror, bodily functions, gore, blood, death)

The fabricators function well enough, until they don't. One day, one moment, everything's all right — the food doesn't generally taste amazing and sometimes downright awful, but it's nourishing and filling no matter what your dietary needs — and the next, things go a little haywire.

In short, the fabricators are malfunctioning.

Oh, they're still producing food that looks and tastes much the same as before, but now there are some unexpected side effects.

NB: Characters may experience any of the following side effects: nausea ranging from slight to debilitating, the sensation of being happily and affectionately — but not overwhelmingly — drunk, bone-deep exhaustion and weariness that makes it hard to move, or repeated hallucinations of loved ones screaming for help, reaching out to characters and leading them down abandoned corridors or being killed by unseen forces.

The extent to which characters are affected is up to players, as is whether you'd prefer to play this more lightheartedly or tackling more serious themes. If the latter, please provide warnings in subject lines where necessary.

( 0 0 5 ) » NETWORK
The comms device you found next to you when waking up connects to a station-wide network, REVERIE NET. You have the option to post video, voice or text messages.

What will you share?
( 0 0 5 . 1 ) » NETWORK USERNAME
When you first turn on your communication device, it requests for you to pick a username to identify you on the network. It can be anything you want. However, as you try to input a username in your wristband to access the network, you get the following message, along with a small, but irritating, warming sound:

this username is already in use.

What does this mean? Is there other people around? Were there other people around?

( 0 0 6 ) » WILDCARD
The station features a variety of locations, from sleeping quarters free for the claiming to a dirty swimming pool and a bar that still holds alcohol (though some of the bottles seem to have been opened a while ago).

Go wild, but don't wreck the place. It's your home for the foreseeable future, after all.

( 0 0 1 ) » wake up
[ anderson has been trained for situations such as this one — what to do when you find yourself in unknown territory, how to handle probable hostiles, how to stay alive and keep doing your job. she doesn't have a weapon and she doesn't have her armored uniform, but the principles still apply. she pushes the fog from her mind, or at least tries, and moves to stand.

we tried to save the world. there hasn't been anyone who'd tried to save the world in a long time. even anderson knows better than to try. she doesn't want to save the world; she just wants to make a difference. for now, she wants to stay alive so that one day, she still can.

she takes the device and moves closer to the wall to study it. the solidity of it in her back makes her feel a little more stable herself and she focuses on that and then expands her mind, searching for others, searching for their intent. no one who wants to harm her, only more confusion and nausea. a civilian, or at least someone who isn't hostile at the moment. not the one responsible.

so she squares her shoulders and starts walking, rounding a corner until the other person she'd sensed is in view. there she stops. ]
Do you need help?

I have a few questions.
1. Where are you from?
2. Have you heard of Mega City One?
3. Have you been in space before?
4. What are your top five priorities at this time?

[ Erik is not sure how specific she expects the responses to be for the first question. He decides to go with the most vague response and if she wants more information she can ask. Although the more specific the question, the more complicated the answer for him. ]

1. Earth
2. No
3. No
4. Going home is my only priority at this time.

Why do you want to know?

[ it isn't as specific as she expects, but she can think of many reasons why someone would not want to answer specifically. not all of them are good, but several are legitimate. ]

I think if there are many shared priorities, we can work toward those first and foremost.

Survival (my own and that of others), returning home, coordinating ourselves, gathering information. Not necessarily in that order.
magneticfields: (relax)

[personal profile] magneticfields 2018-04-22 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Those all relate back to the original goal of returning home, though. Wouldn't you agree?

depends on how wide you're asking. I was born on Earth, but it's not my home, nor where I was last before I got here.

Naomi Nagata, James Holden, Alex Kamal. Prax Meng, too.

[ still recently awoken, Akechi has spent a while in something of a daze — not because of the sudden relocation, or at least not entirely, but mostly for the fact that he's alive. he was going to die. he knows that without a doubt; it would have been the blood loss, most likely, but if not that, then there were plenty of other factors. and given the circumstances, he'd accepted that death already by the time he remembers fading from consciousness.

he isn't dead, though. he is... unpleasantly alive. surrounded by people and, of course, trapped who the hell knows where in what appears to be space. so: dazed.

which is why he's startled by the sudden appearance of someone who is coming towards him with purpose, like she knew he was there somehow, even though he's been standing here lost in thought for some time. her question comes, and he blinks a few times, processing it. does he need... help. well. that's something he doesn't hear often.

and then it comes over him like a reflex, or perhaps more accurately a survival instinct: he smiles, pleasant and benign. if he really is expected to continue living, and in a place that's likely to have a high risk involved at that, then it seems like the safest bet to default to the carefully constructed, genial personality he's always used. not for trying to gain anyone's approval or affection, this time, but for the sake of securing safety with the people around him. ]

Ah... [ he affects a slight nervousness, like someone would expect from a teenager. ] I don't mean to be rude, but unless you know anything about our situation, then probably not.

[ in the back of his mind is something irritated, the same lonely child who disdains things like friendship: I can do it on my own. ]

[ it is a good act. it would have worked, most likely, on someone other than anderson. on someone without her mutation; on someone who can't read minds and emotions alike. for a moment, she frowns. (of course she's reading his mind; for all that she knows, this is hostile territory. she needs every advantage that she can get.)

but she can understand wanting to secure safety. his intention in this regard seems genuine, at least. ]

I do not. [ know the situation, that is. she doesn't respond that there are things she could have helped with, had they been the case — injury, to some extent, physical threats, the like. instead, she asks: ] How long have you been awake?

[That other person is a petite young woman in a matching jumpsuit, currently trying to open one of the locked doors through sheer will. When she sees Anderson, her eyes widen momentarily in relief.]

Yeah, I'm fine. [It's rushed, an afterthought.] Hey, do you have a hair pin? Any kind of pin?
mindtricks: (⚖ F U T U R E)

[personal profile] mindtricks 2018-04-22 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
No.

[ it's a good thought, but anderson's hair is too short to require hair pins and she doesn't usually wear any. besides - ] I woke up without any of my belongings.

[As did they all, of course. Clara furrows her brow at the oversight. There has to be a way out. Something to discover, someone to shout at; how can she fight everyone's way out of here if nothing happens? If all there is to do is sit and wait on their hands?]

Some of the doors are locked. [She gestures to the one in front of her.] I want to know what's being hidden from us.
