Perhaps it is less adapting and more to agreeing to change what you thought you knew to be the truth.

Humans in my world have little comprehension of complicated science, for example. Plumbing, electricity, engineering, machinery -- seeing such things would make them think it is magic, declaring it abominations and witchcraft. It isn't ever so simple.

An open mind is a difficult thing. Changing your mind is harder.
